About Us
To curious minds, hello, and to longtime fans, hello again!
What's Nu? Magazine aims to highlight the latest and greatest artists in nu-metal, and we are aiming higher with each passing day. Founded by Dest in April of 2025, What's Nu was created to emphasize the importance of physical print. CDs, vinyl, cassettes, and the like allow fans to truly own their music, and fans should be given the opportunity to enjoy content from their favorite bands, as originally intended. With physical print only becoming rarer, we want to give fans what they want. Now an independent publication, What's Nu? is dedicated to pushing that goal further beyond. We have a team of dedicated writers, photographers, and designers who want nothing more than to make this magazine as good as it gets.
Meet The Team
DEST
Dest is the creator of What's Nu?, and directs the visual style of the magazine. Did you know that our first issue was created entirely by Dest? Since then, although more team members are now able to assist in writing, photography, and the like, Dest is still the driving force behind why this magazine is what it is. Like what you see? Thank Dest.
SAM OWENS
Sam Owens is a photographer, editor, writer, and graphic design artist, making him one of the strongest assets of our nu metal journey. He takes part in other projects beyond What's Nu as well, but we all know that the magazine is his favorite. Experimenting and pushing his design style to the limit is how Sam gets the most out of his work. He also enjoys video games, especially Halo.
VERUKA MCLAUGHLIN
Veruka is the website designer for What's Nu, and a writer as well. Currently working on a computer science degree, they spend a lot of time making sure that the work they put out is as perfect as can be. Being raised by parents who were part of the first wave of nu-metal, their appreciation for the genre is more than skin deep.
STEF CARRIZALES
Stef is one of our main photographers, with his influence in the North Texas nu-metal scene being a huge part of his skill. If you're looking for new nu-metal that others might not have pickfed up on yet, Stef will know exactly what you need. A navy veteran as well, he has a unique approach on the world that the rest of the team lacks.
LARS OSTEEN
Lars is our environmental photographer, providing curated assets for our graphic design. A seasoned writer as well, she writes unique analytical pieces on what affects people's perspectives on music as a whole. In her spare time, she enjoys taking pictures of the birds in her area.
BUGGY CON
Buggy is a very talented artist, drawing up assets for the magazine in their own unique style. Inspired by the tattoo industry, and working in it themselves, their style matches very well with our own creative visions. They also have modeled for some of our pages and ads before, showcasing our merch and magazines to a wider audience.
CODY ZACH
Cody, despite not being interested in nu-metal in the slightest, is one of our dedicated editors. A longtime friend of Dest since before What's Nu came to fruition, he gives an outside perspective to what we write, and helps us make our work sensible to larger audiences. He is an invaluable asset throughout our creative processes.
